World Film Photography Day 2008

The first ever "World Film Photography Day" will take place in March 20. Julia has started a Blog Carnival on this topic in her Blog Foreignlight.com.

This is my comment on it.

Will you shoot film? YES!

I always shoot film, usually black and white. Actually, I don’t even own a digital camera and never had. (Well, my cell phone seems to have the capability to produce “pictures”.) I use a Canon 50E SLR small format camera. Prior to that, I took pictures with an old, trusty Ricoh KR-10. I bought it second hand as It’s probably older than I am. But the more modern Canon lenses seem to be superior.
Most of my pictures are produced during vacations, when I’m relaxed and stimulated by new surroundings. That’s why it is likely that I will participate in the “World Film Photography Day”. It gives me a reason to go out and shoot. Depending on the weather it will be a short walk or a longer trip to somewhere. I’m definitely looking forward to it.

I like the idea of the event, even though I would participate in a “General Photography Day” in the same manner. (Even if there were a “Digital Photography Day” I would participate with my film camera, as a statement.) Sure, I don’t like digital photography that much, but the reason for this isn’t the technology. You can produce fantastic pictures with digital equipment, but most users produce bad photos. That might also have been the case in the film photography era, but today, there are masses of bad shots, and they all end up in the web. Taking pictures became to simple and to cheap, taking good pictures still is difficult and expensive in the sense that it takes time to refine your skills.
I hope the WFPD will make some digital photographers think about the origin of photography. Maybe some great pictures will result in this. But I don’t think it will have impact on the whole photography business. There will always be people preferring film and they will concentrate on making good photos. Leave the digital stuff to the masses, let them show their images on the web and cheer each other to the sky.
